Casino holds rock, paper, scissors tournament

Monday, March 13th, 2006

We all played it when we were young whippersnappers but you wouldn’t expect to walk into a casino and be challenged to a game of rock, paper, scissors.

Or would you? Well, that seems to be exactly what is happening at the Luxor Resort Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas this April.

Instead of a few hands at poker or a few spins on the roulette wheel, patrons will be expected to choose carefully between a rock, paper or scissor hand shape.

Around 300 people are expected to participate in the tournament at the Luxor Hotel and Casino.

Taking place on April 9th, the winner will walk away with a cool $50,000 first prize.

So all together now one, two, three….

EPT winner too young

Monday, March 13th, 2006

This year’s European Poker Tour (EPT) winner may sadly have to put his poker playing days on hold.

Despite winning over $1 million in the EPT final, University of Georgia Freshman Jeff Williams is unfortunately not old enough to play in most major US casinos.

Young Mr Williams is just 19 years old, which means he might have to wait a few years before he takes on the high rollers in Las Vegas’ biggest casinos.

This also means that he will be unable to currently take part in prestigious World Series of Poker (WSOP) events.

Williams beat a number of big name players in the EPT Final including 2004 WSOP champion Greg Ryamer, 2005 WSOP champion Jo Hachem and also Marcel “The Flying Dutchman” Luske.

All out of croupiers

Friday, March 10th, 2006

An odd casino tale has arisen in Britain concerning the short-staffed nature of one of the country’s casinos.

That’s right, apparently gambling has become so popular there that one casino in Nottingham has found it hard to hire suitable staff.

This lack of skilled croupiers has been a huge problem, according to Maggie Smith of Gala Casinos.

She said that the antisocial working hours and the skilled nature of the job meant many casino operators were having to look abroad for trained croupiers.

Ms Smith told the BBC: “It is difficult purely because we’re generally a night time operation and a lot of young people – rather than work at night – would like to be out with their friends.”

Oh well, at least there’s never the chance of a lack of skilled croupiers when gambling online!

Fake casino shut for being too real

Thursday, March 9th, 2006

US authorities have shut down a fake casino as it was deemed too realistic

The casino in question was a 1920s-themed venue in Wisconsin, which was created by the Wasau Women’s Community Group.

However, a female representative from the state Department of Justice said the casino looked too realistic and as a result threatened them with legal action.

Jane Graham Jennings, the executive director of the woman’s group explained how she didn’t understand the need for proceedings.

She told the Daily Herald: “I explained that we felt it wasn’t illegal in any manner.”

The casino had been using fake money at the event, which is held as an annual fundraiser by the Women’s Community.

The fundraiser went ahead anyway without the casino, however it raised $10,000 less for charity than in had done in the previous year.
