PokerNews launches Danish site

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

PokerNews has announced the launch of a Danish version of its site.

The new addition brings the number of languages offered by PokerNews to 14, including two in different Chinese dialects.

The new offering will allow fans in Denmark to keep up to date with the latest goings on in the poker world and is further evidence, if it were needed, that poker is a truly global game.

“The people of northern Europe have shown as much passion for the game of poker as any area in the world,” said PokerNews’ chief executive officer Damon Rasheed.

“With top players like Gus Hansen hailing from Denmark, the Danish people have demonstrated a strong demand for knowing what’s going on in the poker world.”

It is hoped that two more alternate language sites will be unveiled before the end of the year, with more are planned for 2007.

Super casino awaits approval

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

The site for the UK’s first super casino is still in the balance, according to the government’s advisory panel.

The Casino Advisory Panel has refuted rumours that the Millennium Dome in east London has already been assigned the casino.

Chairman of the group, Professor Stephen Crow, told a public hearing in to the location of the new enterprise that the Greenwich site was not a done deal.

“We have made no such decision – in fact, we have made no decision at all until we have considered everything”, he said.

John Prescott’s recent stay at the ranch of Philip Anschutz, the man behind the Dome bid, was also dismissed as a factor of importance by Professor Crow.

Sites at Blackpool, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield are also vying to become Britain’s first unlimited jackpot casino.

Earlier this summer, AEG began building the shell of the Dome casino in readiness for the announcement in December.

The firm claimed that it would be too costly to wait for the decision to be made.

Getting Lucky poker book launched

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

Writer Richard Sparks has unveiled his latest take on the world of poker: Getting Lucky: The Education of a Mad Poker Player.

Rather than a sequel to a Diary Of A Mad Poker Player, which recounted the author’s failed attempt to gain entry to the World Series of Poker main event in 2004, Mr Sparks takes a more educational view in this offering, according to Poker News.

The book deals mainly with his instruction from the 1983 World Champion Tom McEvoy and includes detailed analysis on poker strategy although it also touches on a variety of entertaining areas, including an interview with a renowned poker cheat.

The author also has a word of warning for those who believe a good poker education or this book will allow you to win every time.

“If a ‘perfect game’ is one in which greater skill will always win over lesser skill then poker is far from being a perfect game,” he writes.

“It is poker’s very ‘imperfectness’ that makes it a perfect analogy for our imperfect lives in this imperfect, uncertain world.”

Hollywood stars have own gambling den

Monday, August 14th, 2006

As the filming for the third of Danny Ocean’s crime capers begins, a poker lounge has been specially built for the stars and the film’s crew.

Ocean’s 13, expected to be released next summer, sees the return of Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matt Damon as the popular and sophisticated master criminals.

And, if the rumours are to be believed, Hollywood legend Al Pacino may also make a fleeting appearance in the latest instalment.

Producer Jerry Weintraub arranged for the special casino, where the on-set meals will be served, as well as a 24-hour bar and drivers to take them home, just in case.

Weintraub said the idea came from his association with the first Danny Ocean: “It was inspired by Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, guys I hung around with all my life, who made the original Ocean’s 11.”

Steven Soderbergh returns to direct, and David Holmes will once again score this stylish crime thriller.

Record profits for CryptoLogic

Friday, August 4th, 2006

Award-winning software provider CryptoLogic has posted record profits for the second quarter of 2006.

The new figures from CryptoLogic have shown revenue increases of 52 per cent, which according to a company statement were “better-than-expected” given that the second quarter is a traditionally slow one for the industry.

A $30.4 million total revenue amount is a 12 per cent increase on the figures for the first quarter and significantly above CryptoLogic’s predicted revenue for the period of between $26.4 and $26.7 million.

Lewis Rose, CryptoLogic CEO, said: “CryptoLogic’s new casino games went head-to-head with the World Cup and warm weather – and won. Our Q2 revenue and earnings were far ahead of expectations and surpassed our results in Q1 2006, which is a typically stronger quarter.

“Players have embraced our new games and industry commentators agree that we have taken the online slot experience to the next level. CryptoLogic’s player-centric, product diversification and innovation strategy is paying off.”

Recent highlights for the online gaming software manufacturer include an increase in casino fees due to release of 11 new games by the group and also the expansion of its high-margin online slot portfolio.

Boxing champ floored by WSOP knockout

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

The former undisputed boxing champion Lennox Lewis failed to survive the first round of the World Series of Poker (WSOP).

The heavyweight star, who represented Canada at the 1988 Olympics but fought for Britain during his professional career, was ousted by a good play from Cecilia Mortensen, the wife of professional poker player Carlos Mortensen.

Lewis’ Ace-ten lost out to Mortensen’s Ace-Queen but he was said to have enjoyed himself.

“In boxing you know what cards are going to be dealt. In this you don’t,” said the star, when asked to explain the difference between poker and boxing.

Lewis was widely regarded as an outsider for the main title and so it proved, heading home with around 6,000 other players before the second round.

Actress Shannon Elizabeth and Jennifer Tilly were also spotted at the tables during the first four days of play.
