Super casino awaits approval

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

The site for the UK’s first super casino is still in the balance, according to the government’s advisory panel.

The Casino Advisory Panel has refuted rumours that the Millennium Dome in east London has already been assigned the casino.

Chairman of the group, Professor Stephen Crow, told a public hearing in to the location of the new enterprise that the Greenwich site was not a done deal.

“We have made no such decision – in fact, we have made no decision at all until we have considered everything”, he said.

John Prescott’s recent stay at the ranch of Philip Anschutz, the man behind the Dome bid, was also dismissed as a factor of importance by Professor Crow.

Sites at Blackpool, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield are also vying to become Britain’s first unlimited jackpot casino.

Earlier this summer, AEG began building the shell of the Dome casino in readiness for the announcement in December.

The firm claimed that it would be too costly to wait for the decision to be made.

Casino boat gets go-ahead

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

The on-off saga of Louisiana’s proposed casino boat has finally come to an end with the announcement that the development will now go ahead.

After weeks of negotiations, parishioners in St Mary’s district, Louisiana, have given their approval for a casino boat to be relocated in the area.

The boat, which was originally located at a New Orleans berth, was damaged during Hurricane Katrina. As a result, town officials suggested the casino boat could be relocated to a berth on the eastern side of the city at Bayou Boeuf in Amelia.

And following weeks of wrangling, state gaming officials have now given the go-ahead after a local vote saw 65 per cent of residents approve the move.

The newly named Belle of Amelia (formally the Belle of New Orleans) managed to convince 5,163 local residents in the voting process – it is expected to bring jobs and revenue to the area.
